Passengers traveling through Vienna International Airport may soon experience a significant improvement at security checkpoints. The long‑standing 100‑milliliter limit for liquids in hand luggage is expected to be lifted once the airport completes its transition to new high‑tech scanners. The upgrade is currently underway, and the new system will eventually allow travelers to carry liquids of up to 2 liters per container in their cabin bags.
A Shift Driven by New CT Technology
Vienna Airport is replacing its older security scanners with modern CT-based systems, similar to those used in medical imaging. These scanners generate detailed 3D images of luggage, enabling security staff to inspect contents more accurately and efficiently.
Key benefits include:

- Laptops and other electronics can stay inside hand luggage.
- Faster, smoother security checks with fewer bottlenecks.
The airport is investing around 25 million euros in the upgrade, which is being rolled out step by step. The goal is to have the new scanners fully operational by the peak summer travel season. Future expansion projects, including the planned extension of Terminal 3, will also be equipped with the updated technology.
Old Rules Still Apply for Now
Despite the progress, the relaxed liquid rules are not yet in effect. Until the installation is complete, passengers must continue to follow the familiar 100‑milliliter restriction and pack liquids in transparent, resealable bags. Airport officials emphasize that travelers should stick to the current regulations to avoid delays or confiscations at security.
Europe Moves at Different Speeds
Vienna is not alone in modernizing its security infrastructure, but the pace varies across Europe. Countries such as the United Kingdom and Italy have already introduced the new scanners at many airports, while others remain in transition. This patchwork implementation means travelers may encounter different rules depending on their departure point.
For anyone flying in the coming weeks, checking the latest security guidelines for each airport remains essential. Even though the new standards are on the horizon, they are not yet universally applied.
